Toxoplasma gondii in Australian smallgoods
نویسنده
چکیده
Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most common parasitic infections of humans and other warm-blooded animals. In most adults it does not cause serious illness, but severe disease may result from infection of fetuses and immuno-compromised people. Consumption of raw or undercooked meats has been consistently identified as an important source of exposure to T. gondii. Several studies indicate the potential failure to inactivate T. gondii in the processes of cured meat products, referred to as smallgoods in Australia. This publication presents a qualitative risk-based assessment of the processing of ready-to-eat smallgoods. The raw meat ingredients are rated with respect to their likelihood of containing T. gondii cysts and an adjustment is made based on whether all the meat from a particular source is frozen. Next the effectiveness of common processing steps to inactivate T. gondii cysts are assessed, including addition of spices, nitrates, nitrites and salt, use of fermentation, smoking and heat treatment, and the time and temperature during maturation. It is concluded that processing steps which may be effective in the inactivation of T. gondii cysts include freezing, heat treatment and cooking, and the interaction between salt concentration, maturation time and temperature. The assessment is the illustrated using a Microsoft Excel based software tool which was developed to facilitate the easy assessment of four hypothetical smallgoods products.

Vertical transmission of Toxoplasma gondii in Australian marsupials.
To date, little is known about the dynamics of vertical transmission of Toxoplasma gondii in Australian marsupials. Studies in mice demonstrate that vertical transmission of T. gondii is common and that chronically infected mice can transmit T. gondii to successive generations. In this study, PCR and immunohistochemistry were used to detect T. gondii in chronically infected marsupial dams and t...
متن کاملIs Toxoplasma gondii a threat to the conservation of free-ranging Australian marsupial populations?
It has often been asserted that Australian marsupial species are particularly susceptible to Toxoplasma gondii infection and to clinical toxoplasmosis following infection. This implicates T. gondii as a potential threat to marsupial population viability, and contrasts to what is known of T. gondii in populations of several other host species. We reviewed the literature, and found a lack of scie...
متن کاملPrevalence of Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies in Bulk Milk of Dairy Cattle, Mashhad, Iran
Neospora caninum (N. caninum) and Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) are both obligate intracellular protozoan parasites, which have gained considerable attention because of their role in bovine abortion. This study aimed to detect anti-N. caninum and -T. gondii in bulk milk of dairy cattle, Mashhad, Iran. The bulk milk samples were collected from July 2014 to June 2015 and analyzed for anti-N. cani...
متن کاملProlonged Laboratory Maintenance of Toxoplasma gondii Tachyzoites in Co-cultivation with the Bovine Theileria annulata-Infected Lymphoblastoids
Background and Aims: In most of the studies, Toxoplasma gondii is maintained in laboratory mice or studied in vitro using non-lymphoid cell lines or primary mouse macrophages. The target of our research was to design a new axenic culture of Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites to providing a sufficient quantity of them. Material and Methods: Theileria annulata-infected lymphoblastoids, which had been...
متن کاملA serological and parasitological study of Toxoplasma gondii infection in stray cats of Mashhad, Khorasan Razavi province, Iran
The aim of the present study was to determine seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infectionin stray cats and correlation with oocyst shedding and IFN-γ concentration. From April to August 2016, one hundred fifty-nine stray cats were captured from various localities in Mashhad area. The blood and fecal samples were collected from each cat. The serum samples were examined to detect antib...
